Heat transfer vinyl, or HDM for short, is a special vinyl polymer which is used extensively in the vinyl arts and crafts industry to make promotional items and decorative items. It comes as a flat sheet or roll with an adhesive backing typically made of high impact plastic, so that it may be torn, weeded and applied directly onto a chosen substrate for heat treatment. One may think this would be difficult but in fact, it is quite easy to do, and if one follows the proper steps then, one will be able to get fantastic results. It takes a lot of practice to master using heat transfer vinyl correctly and getting the best results however, so if one wants to achieve the best possible outcome, one needs to have patience. Using Heat Transfer Vinyl in a Variety of Environments

The first step is to make sure the heat transfer vinyl that is being used is suitable for the fabric being treated. There are three different grades of heat treatment which depend on the thickness and the type of material. For example, the heat transfer vinyl used to create patchwork clothing can only be used with cotton fabrics. The same applies for the use of the heat transfer vinyl used to create flower images on woven tapestries and the like. Once the appropriate heat treatment is used, one should not need to use any other topical heat treatments and can enjoy months to years of use of the item without having to change the pattern.

Once the heat transfer vinyl has been applied onto the required surface, it should be allowed to dry thoroughly before the next step. This is usually a process where a piece of paper, cotton or polyester is pressed into the surface of the fabric with the aid of a machine or a person. After this has been done, a heat press, typically consisting of two rollers and a pressing drum, should be used in order to flatten the fabric into the desired shape. Once the desired flattening is achieved, the garment can then be finished by hand stitching the edges using the appropriate thread. This garment is highly beneficial for a wide range of applications and it is an ideal choice for many cotton and polyester garments.
